Why New Businesses Opening in College Station Wait for Fall

Drive down University Drive East or Texas Avenue this week and you will pass at least three storefronts with paper still taped over the glass. That is not unusual for a college town in August. The openings described here fall on different dates, but JD Ranch Boutique picked September 4 through 6, the weekend Texas A&M plays its first home game of the season.

A Grand Opening on Game-Day Weekend

KBTX reported that JD Ranch Boutique moved into the former Charli's space at 505 University Drive East a few weeks ago. Owner Jackie Doss, a 2021 Texas A&M graduate, scheduled the official grand opening weekend for September 4 through 6, timed to the Aggies' first home game against Missouri State. She told a local news crew the town felt like it was about to boom, and she wanted to be open during the exact weekend that boom becomes visible.

Final Score Sports Bar and Arcade has opened at 121 North Main Street in Historic Downtown Bryan. Its own marketing describes the location as "not on Northgate." The venue has a downstairs sports bar with screens built around Aggie football and pool tables upstairs.

Businesses Opening Before the Season

Some businesses opened before kickoff weekend.

Lucky Goat Coffee Co. held its grand opening on August 20 at its new location on University Drive in Bryan's Hudson Oaks area, a full two weeks before the season opener. Owners Jimmy and Jana Rourk signed the lease back in October 2025 and had been building the space out since the previous May.

Javi's Tex-Mex opened August 6 in the former Red Lobster on University Drive East, a building that had sat empty since 2020.

Unreined Whiskey took a longer view entirely. The brand billed as the official whiskey of Texas A&M Athletics opened its 30,000-square-foot visitor center and rickhouse at WildHorse Ranch on August 8, and co-founder Nelson Ingram, a 2013 Texas A&M graduate, has said the project took years to reach that point, with design starting in 2023 and groundbreaking in 2024. The four-story rickhouse holds 6,668 barrels on a 600-acre working bison and cattle ranch. Ingram has also said the site was chosen partly on climate data, since College Station's humidity closely resembles the bourbon-producing counties of northern Kentucky. A project with a multi-year construction timeline does not open on a marketing calendar. It opens when the building is finished, and this year that finish line happened to land a few weeks before the season did.

Other businesses in the area have opening dates outside the season-opener weekend.

Sprouts Farmers Market has a confirmed opening date of September 25, after the season opener, in the former Big Lots space at Texas Avenue and Holleman Drive East. The grand opening weekend runs September 25 through 27, with a 6:45 a.m. ribbon cutting on Friday, free totes for the first 200 shoppers each day, and a free long-stem rose for the first 400 customers on opening day.

Dave & Buster's is still under construction at Post Oak Mall, with an opening described only as "later this year" as of mid-August. Big anchor tenants like this typically run on build-out permits and equipment delivery schedules that do not bend for a single Saturday, which is likely why it will miss the opener entirely and land sometime in the stretch between football season and the holidays instead.

Century Square's own calendar includes other milestones. Lululemon's move into a larger 5,766-square-foot space near CoCo Shrimp had its grand opening back in February, well outside football season. And The Penny, a student apartment community with its leasing office set up inside Century Square between 4 Brothers NY Bagels and ShareTea, opened that showroom this spring and is set to begin pre-leasing in September.
